This is the only distinction between the dream and the real: reality allows you to doubt, and the dream does not allow you to doubt....
The Mass media play a huge role in our life. The mass media influences us, set new trends in society and change our perspective.
Modern society has become heavy users of media. Diehard fans followed shows from season one to the next season. The viewers are glued to their TV set to watch popular shows like Lost, Amazing Race and American Idol. This showed dominance of US media products has. Most of these series occupies the prime time slot of Local TV.
In addition, there are always attractive sneak previews shown repeatedly introducing the next coming episode shown. This is priming us, to make sure we would tune it to the show. This is normal practiced used even in the cinema. After watching a sneak preview and we would be tempted to watch that show once it was officially released in the theatre.
Almost every teen knows about Twilight. Twilight, the movie brought worldwide by storm. Everyone who watched the movie became hardcore fans. They adored the show, read the book and are waiting anxiously for the next upcoming show. I thought what the big hoo ha was about Twilight and did not want to be absorbed in the vampire chick flick. However, just the other day, I was browsing Ashikin's blog. She was covering an entry on the movie, Twilight. She included you tube videos that were released and wrote an excellent content about the show. Initially, I was skeptical. Now, I am converted fan of twilight. If you ask me whose team I’m on? It is Team Edward!
A little closing for the last entry.
Even in the ever-changing flow of life there are moments in which we come to a point of completion. In these moments we are able to perceive the whole picture, the composite of all the small pieces that have occupied our attention for so long. In the finishing, we can either be in despair because we don't want the situation to come to an end, or we can be grateful and accepting of the fact that life is full of endings and new beginnings.
Whatever has been absorbing our time and energy is now coming to an end. In completing it, we will be clearing the space for something new to begin. Use this interval to celebrate both - the end of the old and the coming of the new.

No doubt a large number of timeslots goes to American movies, but is there really a dominant American culture here? Certainly not, as a wide variety of movies from other parts of the world do get aired also. Say for example, Asian films from Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong are showing alongside with western films. Furthermore, films get a bigger timeslot due to their date of release, not where they are from.
ReplyDeleteWestern cultures are a common tool (eg, the movie New Moon) for socialisation, but will not become a stage for us. We all would likely catch that movie and create a common topic. However, it will not have any further influence (we wouldn't become vampires anyway) untill the next sequel is out and the whole cycle repeats again.
PS: Not all beginning are good either. The end of this blog spells the near beginning of exams. Horror!!!

ReplyDeleteAlthough Singapore likes to proclaim that they are No. 1 in everything, we seem to have an inferiority complex when it comes to the arts. Most of the movies shown in the large cinemas are from overseas, be it America, Korea, or Hong Kong. Even the award-winning Singaporeans films are only shown in indie cinemas.
ReplyDeleteI think it is at least partly due to the lack of funds on the part of Singapore filmakers to blast locals with sneak previews and trailers the way foreign movies can afford to. How good the film is, or how famous the director, are naturally other variables, but I feel publicity is very important for the movie industry.
Our local media is a pretty unique case, hence it is quite difficult to say if there is any form of cultural imperialism taking root here. With a multi-racial society, it is hard to cater to everyone needs. Hence, what is aired are products that have good forecasted demand. It is not a deliberate measure to poison anybody’s mind to western culture. How many would actually watch a draggy Taiwanese (If it was dubbed, then i think they would take years to dub that too.) show? Furthermore, with government censorship, the essence of shows might be lost due to dubbing or scenes cut away as they are deemed unsuitable.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, constant exposure would make one conform to western ideology unconsciously. Start a topic on democracy and Neo-confucianism. The latter is likely to draw a alot more blank looks. Hence, it is hard to conclude. But ask me, I think i would also agree with Shawn.
I agree with Grace that Singapore is inferior when it comes to part on arts. Even with trailers, they do not create much interest to the public as the public usually just brush aside local films and are more interested in the foreign ones.
ReplyDeleteHello Shawn!
ReplyDeleteIf one is to compare, it would have harder to watch local shows. If there's 5 Hollywood block buster there would only be 1 local show. Unless there's a huge endorsement and support from the government.
Nevertheless, thanks for sharing your view.
Hello Grace,
ReplyDeleteI admit those 1000 over draggy episode is crazy! Let's not forgot those Tamil drama too! It runs seasons and seasons too!
Unless it's rainforest production or something artsy short films it still need to go through strict censorship board.
Hello Hello Shimona! =D
ReplyDeletePutting all these aside, korean shows anytime eh? ;)
